Bridgerton Filming Locations

Bridgerton, the hit Netflix series that continues to capture the hearts of millions worldwide with its captivating drama set in Regency-era London, was filmed at the Old Royal Naval College. To draw on the excitement, Daiana Matei, our Events Co-ordinator and Bridgerton mega-fan, looks back at some of the episodes filmed at this UNESCO Maritime Heritage Site in Greenwich.

Walking through the Old Royal Naval College grounds, feels like stepping back in time. With its grandiose architecture and sweeping views of the River Thames, it’s easy to imagine oneself amidst the bustling society of Regency England, where debutantes and dashing suitors navigated the intricate dance of courtship and intrigue.

So, it should come as no surprise that this historical site has been used in every season of Bridgerton (and Queen Charlotte) as a dramatic backdrop. Keep reading to find out all the episodes in which the Old Royal Naval College features.

Season 1 & 2

In several episodes in Seasons 1 and 2 of Bridgerton, a paperboy can be seen running to deliver Lady Whistledown’s anticipated ‘scandal sheet’. By using different angles and various colour tonalities, the production’s creative team transports us to what appears to be multiple sumptuous new spaces. But upon closer inspection, you will soon realise that all of these scenes take place in Grand Square and the colonnades.

The same space was used in a scene in Season 2 where characters Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) and Eloise Bridgerton (Claudia Jessie) can be seen strolling and gossiping who Lady Whistledown may be.

Using set dressing and a range of props (including four carriages and eight horses!) Lower Ground Square was transformed into the street outside the Featherington home and ‘Mayfair’.

Season 3

And talking about carriages, fans who have fallen in love with Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) will be pleased to know that in Season 3, Episode 1, he takes his shirt off while driving in front of our iconic dome – a scene not suited of the faint-hearted!

Later in the same season, our beautiful Chapel of St Peter & St Paul was the backdrop for the greatly anticipated wedding of Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton).

Queen Charlotte

The spin-off Queen Charlotte, which was released between Seasons 2 and 3 of Bridgerton, follows the young queen’s marriage to King George III. It is quite fitting that some scenes were filmed on site, as King George III grandfather, George I is depicted in the West Wall of the Painted Hall.

During a solemn funeral scene, Grand Square appears once again. However, the space looks completely different, as the colour editing has favoured the use of greys and blues, aligning the tone with the emotions of the scene.

The Old Royal Naval College stands as a testament to the enduring allure of period dramas and the power of historic settings to transport viewers to another time and place.
