Bridgerton filming at the Old Royal Naval College
Bridgerton, the hit Netflix series that captured the hearts of millions worldwide with its captivating drama set in Regency-era London, is back for another season of scandal and romance this May. To draw on the excitement, Daiana Matei, our Events Co-ordinator and Bridgerton mega-fan, looks back at all the episodes filmed at the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich.
Walking through the Old Royal Naval College grounds, part of the UNESCO Maritime Heritage Site in Greenwich, feels like stepping back in time, with its grandiose architecture and sweeping views of the River Thames. Walking through the meticulously preserved corridors, it’s easy to imagine oneself amidst the bustling society of 19th-century England, where debutantes and dashing suitors navigated the intricate dance of courtship and intrigue.
So, it should come as no surprise that this historical site has been used several times as a dramatic backdrop to bring to life the fashion and glamour of the Regency era. For example, in Episode 1, Season 2 of Bridgerton, a paperboy can be seen running across the colonnades to deliver Lady Whistledown’s anticipated ‘scandal sheet’.
Similarly, in the same episode, characters Penelope Featherington and Eloise Bridgerton can be seen strolling in the market, gossiping about the coming season and wondering who Lady Whistledown may be.
The same location has been used in several episodes; but the creative team behind the show succeeded in transporting us to what appears to be multiple sumptuous new spaces. In Episode 7, Season 2, a different paper boy can be seen scurrying across the Grand Square, surrounded by elegant couples having picnics, once more, hand-delivering the latest gossip.
For fans who have fallen in love with the lavish costumes and balls of Bridgerton, visiting the filming locations in Greenwich offers a chance to immerse oneself in the world of the show. From the picturesque view from the Grand Square to the majestic riverside views along the Thames Path, every spot in the Old Royal Naval College holds the promise of encountering the magic of Bridgerton up close.
As Season 3 of Bridgerton prepares to grace our screens once again, the Old Royal Naval College stands as a testament to the enduring allure of period dramas and the power of historic settings to transport viewers to another time and place. Whether you’re a die-hard fan of the series (like me!) or simply curious to explore the charm of the UNESCO Maritime Heritage Site in Greenwich, a visit to this iconic filming location is sure to leave you enchanted and inspired by the romance and grandeur of Bridgerton.
