Join us to create a giant paper flower garland for Goddess Flora as we celebrate Spring this Easter Holiday!

This Easter, to celebrate its 300th anniversary, we are bringing a piece of the Painted Hall outdoors as we shine a spotlight on Flora, Goddess of Flowers and Spring, who is one of the many characters hiding in plain sight in Thornhill’s designs.

Celebrate Spring and with us in this free, relaxed drop-in outdoor workshop as we create a giant paper flower garland worthy of Goddess Flora!

Suitable for all ages, come and find us on the King William Lawns to learn more about Goddess Flora, her story in the Painted Hall and let your creativity flow as you bring flowers to full bloom from craft materials.

Take a moment to enjoy the start of Spring, as we craft outdoors, then add your blooming creations to our communal garland. If you wish, you can also create your own flower so you can take home a piece of Flora’s magic.

Who is Flora? | Painted Hall 300

Did you know Thornhill put a kind of clock in his designs for the Painted Hall Ceiling? If you look up at the Lower Hall Ceiling, you can see a big oval with characters sitting all along the edge. These characters are symbols for different star signs and seasons, just like a clock but for the whole year.

One of these characters is Flora, Roman Goddess of Flowers who represents Springtime. In the painting, you can see her holding a flower garland which she brings back to life as she passes it through her hands. She is one of the four seasons you can spot on the ceiling!

Please Note:

  • This event is drop-in only and will operate on a first come, first served basis
  • If event is at capacity, you may be asked to come back later
  • Children must be accompanied and supervised by adults at all times

The activity is set to take place outside on our King William Lawns, but depending on weather on the day, the workshop may be relocated to elsewhere on our site. In the case of bad weather, please speak with a member of our team on the day who will be able to signpost you to the workshop.
