Why was Benjamin West the most celebrated 18th Century artist in the English-speaking world?

The mighty altarpiece in the Chapel of the Old Royal Naval College, known as the ‘Preservation of St Paul after a Shipwreck at Malta’ has been newly restored to its former glory.

Join us in the Chapel for a fascinating evening in conversation with Loyd Grossman OBE, broadcaster, historian and expert on Benjamin West, and Desmond Shawe-Taylor, former Surveyor of the Queen’s Pictures and Old Royal Naval College trustee, to hear about this great artwork and stories surrounding the extraordinary and celebrated life of Benjamin West.

The bar in the Queen Mary Undercroft beneath the Chapel will be serving drinks before and after the talk.

Your ticket price will help us cover the cost of putting on this event. Further donations would be extremely welcome to this ongoing project; we are currently fundraising for the replacement of the existing lighting system in the Chapel which is dated and in need of an overhaul. The new LED lights will improve the visual appearance in the Chapel, showcase the newly conserved painting, as well as being safer and 85% more environmentally friendly.
